Haivng experienced difficulties with the Mathematics subject himself when he was still in school, Mr Chua began to envision the concept behind the Filomaths Programme when, like any Singaporean student, he began studying the Ten Year Series in preparation for his GCE 'O' Levels. Noticing that the questions presented in Mathematics papers over the past ten years followed a certain pattern, he gradually developed a system to exploit this new understanding, which led to him getting good results in Mathematics for his 'O' Levels that year.
Mr Chua then kept this secret to himself until after he had served his National Service, when he observed that many students experienced difficulties in learning and mastering Mathematics, just like himself in the past. Because of this, he realised that these students could benefit greatly from the system he developed, and thus developed the Filomaths programme for the purpose of training students in the methods he had developed and used his own benefit many years ago.
Establishing the MATHS SPECIALIST Tuition Centre in 1995, Mr Chua faced many challenges in the beginning, such as advertising his services and obtaining premises for his enterprise. Though Maths Specialist was in danger of failing, the entrepreneur's last ditch gamble of offering a $100/hr rate with Money-back guarantee worked, gaining him a reprieve, and setting the foundation for the eventual success of Maths Specialist and the Filomaths programme.
